All students are required to complete the following for the Master's degree in German:
- 30 hours of graduate credit, consisting of 24 hours of credit plus 6 hours of GER 768 (Reseach Credit) with the presentation of a Master's thesis (plan A), or 30 credit hours of regular courses (Plan B, no thesis). Both plans require at least 24 credits in GER-prefix courses. The thesis option (Plan A) is not available to students entering the program in or after August, 2020.
- reading knowledge of a second foreign language; this requirement can be fulfilled by one of the methods given in the Graduate School Bulletin.
- a comprehensive written and oral examination.
Courses taken to fulfill the second foreign language requirement do not count towards the completion of the 30 hours of graduate course work.
At least half of students' course work has to be at the 600 level or above and 24 hours have to be in courses with the German course prefix. Students are required to take at least one German course during each semester they are enrolled in the German graduate program.
Each semester students select from available courses in consultation with the graduate studies advisor.
For a complete list of courses offered by the Department, see the UK Graduate School Bulletin.
