Date:
-
Location:
W.T.Young Library Auditorium
Speaker(s) / Presenter(s):
Anibal Perez

This year’s Witness for Peace Southeast speaker is Anibal Perez, the President of ASOTRED-Puerto (Asociacion de Trabajadores Enfermos de Drummond), the Association of ex-Drummond port employees who became sick while working at Drummond. He helps those who have become seriously ill or been injured while working for Drummond Coal in the Department of Cesar and the port at Ciénaga. Anibal has played a major role in making public the January 13, 2013 Drummond coal spill by sending photos of the sinking barge to media outlets. Five days after these photos were released to the public, Drummond filed a report about the spill. Anibal then aided the environmental investigation into Drummond’s actions, resulting in death threats to him and his family.

Anibal will speak about his experience organizing for workers’ rights and environmental rights in northeast Colombia.

This lecture is made possible by Witness for Peace Southeast and with funding from UK’s Student Sustainability Council (http://www.sustainability.uky.edu/SSC).
