Composition, Design, and Intent: Arturo Sandoval
Arturo Sandoval, a professor in the College of Fine Arts, discussed representations of beauty and diversity through the work of Appalachian quilt artists. He used the international art quilt competition Quilt National biannual as his main research reference. Quilt National is described as a trendsetter in the fiber art fild and displays the most important and innovative art quilts from around the world. Sandoval's presentation guided attendees through a variety of fiber arts and mixed media quilts.
Voices from Shanghai: May 2012 Symposium
At the end of May 2012, a delegation of faculty from the University of Kentucky went to Shanghai University to promote the American Studies Center, a partnership between UK and SHU. Michelle Sizemore facilitated a group discussion between UK and SHU students about cultural difference, identity, and storytelling across cultures.
Making International Connections: UK Students at Shanghai University
James Knoer, Meredith King & Geoffrey Banta are three students that took Chinese language courses at Shanghai University in May & June of 2012. Their professor, Liang Luo, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern & Classical Languages, Literatures & Cultures (MCL) at the University of Kentucky.

As the 2011-12 academic year comes to a close let me thank you for all the incredible work, dedication and commitment you have exhibited throughout the year. Without a doubt, our faculty and staff rival those at the most prestigious institutions in the country.
Over the last year we have welcomed and educated a record-number of new students; we have successfully launched a new general education curriculum (UK Core) and a new residential college (Wired); we have made progress on shortening time-to-degree through our online and summer school initiative; we have greatly expanded our international efforts through faculty exchanges, short-courses, new education abroad programs, and our passport to the world initiative (Year of China); among many, many other successes.
Our faculty and staff have been recognized by countless national organizations and agencies, as well as by the University community. The following are just a handful of the many successes achieved this year:
UK Faculty and Students Share Appalachian Culture in China
University of Kentucky students and faculty will travel to Shanghai in May to share Appalachian culture at the American Studies Center at Shanghai University.
UK Confucius Institute Selected as Official Testing Center for Ky.
Hanban, the Confucius Institute headquarters in Beijing, has designated the University of Kentucky Confucius Institute as the official Chinese proficiency test center for the state of Kentucky.
A&S Dean Mark Kornbluh Visits Jilin University in Changchun, China
Dean Kornbluh met with Jilin University's Vice President, students, and delivered talk to strengthen the partnership between the two universities.

Year of China Film Series: The Other Half
This film portrays the life of a law clerk, Xiaofen, living in a Chinese industrial town. The film alternates between true stories told by Xiaofen’s clients and Xiaofen’s own narrative, a glimpse into the contemporary lives of women living in China’s inland. This film is being shown as a part of Year of China: awaken the past, discover the future.
