SWAP Talk with Tom Maigret and Zach Hackworth

Our SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachian in Progress) Talk on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 features two student presentations! Tom Maigret presents " Landscape-level effects of surface mining on Appalachian biodiversity: from population genetics to ecosystems".  Zach Hackworth presents "Mammalian Herbivory Impacts on Surface Coal Mine Reclamation and Reforestation in Southeastern Kentucky".  Both presenters are recipients of 2017 UK Appalachian Center Eller & Billings Student Research Awards.

Help us welcome graduate student Tammy Clemons for a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Talk entitled "Gendered and Generational Perspectives on Youth Media Education and Activism in Central Appalachia"!  Tammy is a graduate student in the Department of Anthropology and presents her work as one of the 2017 UK Appalachian Center James S. Brown Award recipients.  This event is free for all UK students, staff, and faculty and will be held from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.

800 Acorns: Celebrating the Charter of the Forest's Octocentennial

As part of the Arts & Sciences Year of Civics and Citizenship in the 21st Century: Keys to Our Common Future, we celebrate the 800th Charter of the Forest.  This tree-planting event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Rockhouse Rd.  Lunch will be provided, and there will be free t-shirts with the acorn logo that was designed by local artist John Lackey. Cutting Edge Northern Peatland Research at the SPRUCE: Early Results

As a part of UK Water Week, we welcome Randy Kolka, Team Leader and Research Soil Scientist with the USDA Forest Service's Northern Research Station to our Campus! Dr. Kolka will talk about the Importance of Bogs in Carbon Storage in his work and research on Peatlands. This event will take place at The 90, Room 202 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. This is a free event for UK Students, Faculty, and Staff. The event is organized and co-sponsored by the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability & the Environment,  Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Forestry, and the UK Appalachian Center. UK Sustainability Forum

Please join us for the 7th annual UK Sustainability Forum on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Hilary J. Boone Center from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (awards presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.)!  This event is co-sponsored by the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment and the UK Appalachian Center.  This forum highlights accomplishments of UK’s faculty and students who conduct interdisciplinary research and other forms of scholarship relating to environmental and sustainability issues. We welcome undergraduate and graduate student research contributions in the areas of Environmental Science, Public and Environmental Health, Economic and Social Policy, Political Ecology, Manufacturing and Materials Science, as well as projects, artwork, design concepts, and other initiatives that provide creative and innovative ways to approach or highlight a sustainability issue.  Results of the 2017 Sustainability Challenge Grant program will be presented, and 2018 winners will be announced during the awards ceremony.  Faculty and staff are welcome to attend.

 Monetary awards will be presented to the top student posters/presentations.  Space is limited to first 24 submissions.

Please join us as we welcome Jacob Hutton and Kenton Sena to the UK Appalachian Center for their SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) presentations as 2017 UKAC Eller & Billings Student Research Awardees!  Mr. Hutton presents Stream salamander occupancy along a specific conductance gradient; Mr. Sena presents Tracking a tree-killer: Modeling Phytophthora cinnamomi distribution in eastern Kentucky.  This event will be held from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2017.  This is a free event for UK students, faculty, and staff!
