Chellgren Center Names 36 New Fellows, Five Endowed Professorships

The University of Kentucky Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence honored its newest class of Chellgren Fellows Sunday, Aug. 23. Five Chellgren Endowed Professorships were also announced.

Celebrate A&S: 2012 Hall of Fame Inductee Louis J. Swift

Lou Swift graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1963 and joined UK’s faculty as the chair of the newly reformed Department of Classics in 1970. His research interests focus on the study of early Christianity, including the issue of war and peace in late antiquity, and the relationship between religion and politics in America. Though he officially retired in 2001, he continues to teach an undergraduate course on the connection between religion and politics in America.

Classics Graduate Student Awarded Fellowship to Study in Athens, Greece
Congratulations are in order for graduate student Jonathan Meyer who has been awarded a fellowship to attend The American School of Classical Studies at Athens next year. Meyer, a Master’s student in the UK Classics Department, will spend the 2012-2013 school year in Greece studying the history and culture of ancient Greece and the Hellenic world.

Classics Students Awarded Otis Singletary Fellowship
The fellowship is a one-time scholarship awarded to graduating seniors who are continuing their post-baccalaureate education at UK. Paralleling the growth of the classics program, awards such as these contribute to the continued success in attracting some of the best students from around the world, and especially in keeping the ones who already call the classics program home.
