The preferred method of donating during the UK United Way of the Bluegrass Campaign for 2014 is payroll deduction. It is so simple and allows you to designate your funds to a specific agency. All donations that do not have a designation request will go into the general funds category and will be used for the most pressing needs in our community.

As the official start of the UK United Way Campaign is set to begin on October 1 and run through October 31, I wanted to share with you a brief update on how we are doing so far.

Since the beginning of September, several areas are collecting "Change for Change." I am purposely not counting these funds until the campaign ends with hopes that more contributions will come in via this method of giving to the United Way.

In addition to the "Change for Change" program, we also held our first-ever Chili/Soup Cookoff as a kickoff to our United Way campaign.

As we get ready to kick off the 2014 United Way campaign at UK, I would like to share with you information about upcoming opportunities to participate either by monetary or community service gifts.

First of all, on Tuesday, September 23, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., in Conference Room 318 in POT, we will kick off our Brown Bag sessions for the Fall. The first topic will be United Way and we are raising awareness and funds by hosting a Chili/Soup Cook Off. To participate, please plan to donate $2 to get samplings of soups, chili and deserts prepared by your co-workers. If you are interested in participating, please RSVP here and let us know if you will be bringing your special recipes for chili, soup or a desert. It should be a fun and informative session.

At the great suggestion from a mentor, I made an appointment and met with Diane Kohler.  She is Manager of UK Human Resources Career Development.  It really was a fantastic meeting. 

Before the meeting, I made an appointment as directed on the website and, after instruction from the office, filled out the required online questionnaire found here: http://www.uky.edu/hr/forms/career-development.  This step was important, I found, because it made me think.  It does ask for brief background information about career and education, other employment at UK, where you are currently, and how long you’ve been in your position.  Then comes the real “meat”.  What are your career goals?  What outcomes do you hope to achieve as a result of career counseling and/or job search coaching?  Oddly enough, as someone who considers myself a definite “Planner”, I really had to put thought into these answers.  As simple as it sounds, it was a great exercise for me.

I grew up in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas while my father worked on his degrees and started his teaching career.  We ended up in Richmond by the time I was in 4th grade with him teaching at E.K.U.  I graduated from Eastern with a degree in Business Administration (Marketing).  Previous positions have included everything from waiting tables (quite a learning experience!) to Biological Sales (vaccines).  It was only a matter of time before I ended up working at a University, something I had wanted to do from the time I was very young and tagged along everywhere after my dad, grading his papers, cleaning his office, and observing every career position on campus. I came to work for U.K. part time in 2010, and joined A&S last year.  My husband and I have two children and a mutt that we all love to pieces.  If you have talked to me at all, then you know about my children.  We love having fun with them and their friends, and listening to them talk and laugh.  Life is good! 

Last year, I offered the Department Managers and interested staff a session about social media, a 101 course, that guided people through a brief history of social media and how we can use it in Higher Education, as well as basics for getting started: setting up accounts, which networks are optimal for which kind of media, etc. I'm also offering a new sessions, Social Media 102, the following day. 102 will get more into the content aspect of things: ways to engage audiences, attract followers, incentivize interaction, and ways to create 'shareable' content.

I’m originally from Havelock, North Carolina. However, I now call the beautiful city of Lexington my home. I’m a proud graduate from the University of Kentucky in May 2011. I received a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and completed three minors in Communication, History, and Geography. During my time as an undergrad I established myself as a UK Tour Guide and a Summer Advising Wildcat Assistant. These positions helped me realize my passion for this amazing “See Blue” community eventually guiding me toward being a UK Recruiter for the Chicagoland area. After working as a UK Recruiter for two and half years I transitioned into my current role as A&S Recruiter and Retention Coordinator.

I was born and raised in Lexington, KY.  I graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2012 where I earned my BS in Community Communications and Leadership Development (Agriculture Communications). I began working at UK in 2010 as a student worker in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.  I moved to STEPS in 2012 before becoming an employee in the College of Arts and Sciences this past June.  I will be married a year in August to my husband Matt and we live here in Lexington.  We have a 7 year-old Australian Shepherd/Border Collie named Oliver.
